Book I Just Finished:

Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance

By: Angela Duckworth

Grit:The Power of Passion and Perseverance

Review:  This book had me before I was out of the intro.  I’ve never been the most talented or the most athletic person in the room, but what I did possess was a relentless work ethic and a desire to improve.  It was instilled in me as a young man that you never give up, and quitting wasn’t an option.  I know there’s an unhealthy version of this mindset, but it has served me well the majority of my life.  Angela dives into the science of “Grit” but also gives some practical examples from the success of some high-profile athletes.  I highly recommend the book to anyone who has the desire to push past your fears and limitations and succeed at what matters most to you.

Podcast that was SUPER interesting:

Freakonomics Radio (Episode 463) - How to Get Anyone to Do Anything

Freakonomics Radio - Episode 463

This podcast is an interview with author Robert B. Cialdini who wrote “Influence – The Psychology of Persuasion” back in the 80’s.  In the podcast host Stephen Dubner talks about the “7 levers of influence” and how learning each one empowers you to profoundly influence others.  We are all influenced in some way and have been by someone.  When I look back over my life, I can easily see the people who influenced my life the most in both positive and negative ways.  I’m actually in the process of writing a book on this subject that I hope to finish by the end of the year (how’s that for holding myself accountable?).  One part of the book I found very interesting was how we can use our influence in a positive way but also for selfish reasons.  They kind of dive into the idea of using influence to manipulate.  I found it very interesting and plan on reading the book at some point.

Quote I found inspiring:

“The quality of our relationships determines the quality of our lives.”

Esther Perel

We’ve all experienced the huge impact relationships can have on our lives both negative and positive.  What’s interesting is that we decide who those people are and yet there are so many people who choose to allow toxic people to speak into their lives.  Let’s choose quality friends.  Not perfect, definitely not toxic, simply quality.
